Teacher . Professor . Private Coach
I have been an acting teacher and private coach for over twenty years. My objective is to give actors the technique, craft and skills they require for stage and camera work, while guiding them to develop their talent. I believe what makes an actor's performance interesting is choice, detail and authenticity.

Training and Process
I teach at Marymount Manhattan College and I've also taught at Brooklyn College, Hunter College, The Santa Fe University of Art and Design, and The Stella Adler Studio of Acting. I hold an MFA in Directing from Brooklyn College, an MA in Theatre from Hunter College and I trained at The Stella Adler Studio in their full-time program. Like Stella, I teach from the imagination using given circumstances, objectives, actions/tactics, justifications and character work. I 've also had the opportunity to work and collaborate with several other master teachers whose style and process I have incorporated in my teaching and directing. Some of these artists are: Jon Jory, Anne Bogart, Mary Overlie, Peter Brook, Alan Arkin, David Shiner, Tom Bullard, Tina Howe and Irina Brown from the National Theatre. I have developed a collective style which offers the actor autonomy and authenticity.

Student Reviews
“Cristina Duarte, is a phenomenal teacher as well as a director! Precise, detailed, patient and full of positive energy, she approaches every scene and play individually with new fresh ideas and efficient ways to elevate both the actors and the scene itself!”
-- Michalis Faliagas, Actor

“Working with Cristina has been amazing. She’s incredibly supportive and creates a space where my creativity can thrive without fear. I love how she knows what needs work and gives feedback that really connects with the actor’s experience. Her honesty is clear, but never discouraging, and I always leave feeling like I’ve learned something valuable and excited to improve!”
--Anna Fox, Actor

“Cristina has been an immense help and joy to work with! I feel so much more capable and autonomous after working with her - she not only gives practical craft techniques that are often ignored, but she helps actors look at projects through a director’s eye. Her instruction has allowed me to look at any script or side and not be overwhelmed!”
---Jason Joo, Actor

"Cristina Duarte is one of the most dynamic acting coaches I have ever worked with. Her depth of experience spans from working professionally as an actor and director. As a teacher not only can she direct a scene through a director’s lens but she also puts herself in the performers shoes and navigates scenes with language and exercises that are indicative of an actors thought patterns. Not to mention she is a delight to spend time with. I would highly recommend working with her to any theatre professional."
--Taylor Ann, Stella Adler Studio of Acting, Scene Study Student, summer 2022

I am beyond grateful I had the opportunity to study with Cristina Duarte. She has profoundly shaped my growth as an actor, and as a person. Cristina is not only a master of her craft, but also deeply invested in the success and development of each student. She takes the time to understand your unique strengths and areas for improvement, tailoring her guidance to help you reach your full potential. She really does have a rare ability to bring out the best in her students, not just as an actor, but as a human being. She is honest and refreshing.
-Danielle Kogan, Actor, Brooklyn College

"Working with Cristina is such an empowering experience. She has a way of taking a mysterious and heady craft and turning it into something practical and structured for the actor to work with. Beyond Cristina’s sheer expertise, she is a generous and supportive force in the lives of her students.”
--Claire Bridget Martin, Actor

"I studied with Cristina Duarte at the Stella Adler Academy in 2022. Cristina is a wonderful acting coach. She created a safe environment in which all the students felt safe and inspired to become better actors. Cristina gave useful technical feedback which I could apply right away. She is honest with a warm heart. I felt safe with her and learned a lot in her class. I highly recommend her as an acting coach."
--Herman Otten, Actor and Public Speaking Coach, New York City.

“In training with Cristina my work entered a new level of specificity and truth that I had not experienced working with another instructor. She works strongly with imagination and the inner life of the character and very practically to get the actor making strong and specific choices. She is great at pinpointing the exact note an actor needs to push through a mental block they may be facing. As a working director, she teaches from this perspective and helps you develop tools in your acting that can be applied when working with different directors and their individual styles.”
--Carly Helms, Actor
“Cristina Duarte was my scene study professor at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. I remember at the end of our very first session feeling at ease. She has a calming demeanor that I attribute to her experience as well as her love and passion for what she does. Cristina understands the artform and has the right tools in her toolbox to put all the pieces together. When I was writing/producing my One Woman Show I couldn't think of anyone else I would want to direct the production."
--Cindy-Ann Boisson , Actor and Stand-Up comic.

“I was lucky enough to work with Cristina on a project several years ago. Since that time our work together has stuck in my mind as one of the most informative experiences I have had with a director. Cristina’s directing process has informed my acting process since then. It really has transformed the way I approach scene work.”
- Pearle Shannon, Actor, He/She/They

“I was fortunate enough to have Cristina as the first acting teacher I had in New York, in her Scene Study class at Stella Adler. I hadn't acted in years, so I was nervous, but Cristina washed that away by being incredibly encouraging and effective as an instructor. I found her emphasis on subtext and imagination particularly helpful and realistic. After her class I continued working with her on 1:1 coaching sessions to prepare for auditions, where she was thorough and thoughtful in her feedback. I also attended Constellations, which she directed at the Chain Theatre, which I found impactful as a production. I can't wait to see more of her work on stage. Her passion for teaching and the craft is truly inspiring!”
